Food as Connection

Our CherBook event on Food as Connection explored how food brings people together across cultures, generations, and life experiences. We chose this theme because food is much more than nourishment—it connects us with culture, our values and nature.

Activities

  • Icebreaker: Participants connected by sharing a favorite dish or food memory that holds a special place in their lives.

  • Shared Lunch: Participants brought lunch from home that was shared amongst each other

  • Lunch discussions: Participants reflected on family traditions, cultural identity, comfort foods, the role of food in celebrations, and how sharing a meal can create belonging and strengthen relationships.

  • Workshop on vegetable gardening: De host in De Kaskantine showed how the participants can grow their own food at home and reuse kitchen waste as compost

Key takeaway
Food is a universal language. While our traditions and tastes may differ, sharing the stories behind our meals revealed how food has the power to connect people, preserve memories, and create a sense of belonging.
